Dota 2 is one of the deepest games in esports and, for bettors, one of the most interesting. Matches swing wildly, comebacks are real, and the same two teams can look completely different from one patch to the next. That's exactly why the markets can be beaten by people who do their homework, and why they punish people who bet on vibes. This guide walks you through Dota 2 betting from a Canadian point of view: how series formats change the maths, what the main markets actually pay, how drafts and patches matter, how to approach live betting and how to keep a bankroll alive through a long tournament season.
The basics first: you need to be 19+ in most provinces, 18+ in Manitoba and Quebec. This site does not serve Ontario or Alberta residents. Cloudbet, linked on this page, holds a Curaçao licence and is not authorized by any Canadian province, and it is not authorized in Quebec. Every number below is a made-up example to show how the maths works. There are no real teams, odds or predictions here.

Dota 2 in two minutes
Dota 2 is Valve's five-versus-five strategy game. One team plays from the Radiant side of the map, the other from the Dire side, and the goal is to destroy the enemy's main building, the Ancient. Before the game starts, the two captains take turns picking and banning heroes from a pool of well over a hundred. Once the game begins, players farm gold and experience, fight over objectives like towers and the big neutral boss Roshan, and try to snowball an advantage into a win.
A few things matter for betting right away:
- Games are long and uneven. A map might end in 25 minutes or drag past an hour.
- Comebacks happen. A team down a lot of gold can still win one good fight late in the game.
- The game changes with patches. Valve releases balance updates that can flip which heroes and strategies work, and teams adapt at different speeds.
- Matches are usually series. You're often betting on a best-of-three or best-of-five, not a single game.
Series formats: Bo1, Bo2, Bo3, Bo5
The format of a match changes the odds more than most new bettors realize. If one team is a little better on any single map, the longer the series, the more likely the better team comes out on top. Here's how a single-map edge turns into series chances, assuming each map is independent with the same win chance:
| Chance to win one map | Win a Bo3 | Win a Bo5 |
|---|---|---|
| 50% | 50.0% | 50.0% |
| 55% | 57.5% | 59.3% |
| 60% | 64.8% | 68.3% |
| 65% | 71.8% | 76.5% |
| 70% | 78.4% | 83.7% |
| 75% | 84.4% | 89.6% |
So a team that wins 60% of maps against an opponent wins the Bo3 about 65% of the time and the Bo5 about 68% of the time. In a Bo1, of course, it's just the 60%. That's why underdogs are more live in single-map formats and why grand finals in Bo5 tend to favour the stronger side.
The Bo2 twist: draws are possible
Some group stages use best-of-two. That means a 1-1 draw is a real outcome, and it's usually the most likely one when teams are close:
| Map win chance (favourite) | Favourite 2-0 | Draw 1-1 | Underdog 2-0 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50% | 25.0% | 50.0% | 25.0% |
| 55% | 30.3% | 49.5% | 20.2% |
| 60% | 36.0% | 48.0% | 16.0% |
| 65% | 42.3% | 45.5% | 12.2% |
| 70% | 49.0% | 42.0% | 9.0% |
| 75% | 56.2% | 37.5% | 6.2% |
If you bet the "winner" of a Bo2 in a three-way market, you lose on the draw. Some books offer a two-way market on a Bo2 that voids or settles differently on 1-1. Always read which one you're clicking.
Removing the margin from a Dota 2 price
Esports lines often carry a bigger margin than major football or hockey lines. Take an example two-way price of 1.75 on Team A and 2.00 on Team B. Add up the implied chances: 1/1.75 + 1/2.00 = 107.14%. That extra 7.14% is the book's cut. Strip it out and the fair chances are about 53.3% and 46.7%, which means fair odds of roughly 1.875 and 2.143.
| Example prices | Book total | Fair chance (fav / dog) | Fair odds (fav / dog) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.75 / 2.00 | 107.14% | 53.3% / 46.7% | 1.875 / 2.143 |
| 1.40 / 2.80 | 107.14% | 66.7% / 33.3% | 1.50 / 3.00 |
| 1.20 / 4.20 | 107.14% | 77.8% / 22.2% | 1.286 / 4.50 |
A book total over 107% means you're paying a lot for the privilege of betting. Shopping a couple of books and taking the better number is one of the few edges every bettor can grab. Our odds calculator does this margin maths for you.
The main Dota 2 markets
Match winner
Who wins the series. Simple, popular and usually the lowest margin on the board. Make sure you know the format before you bet.
Map winner
Who wins a specific map: map 1, map 2 and so on. Map 1 prices come out before the draft; later maps can react to how the series is going.
Map handicap
In a Bo3, "-1.5 maps" means the favourite has to win 2-0. "+1.5 maps" means the underdog just needs to take one map. With our 60% map-win example, a 2-0 happens 36% of the time, so the fair price on -1.5 is about 2.78. If a book offers 2.55, the expected value is about -8.2% per bet. The underdog at +1.5 wins 64% of the time, so its fair price is about 1.56.
Correct score
Bet the exact series result, like 2-0 or 2-1. At a 60% map edge in a Bo3, the scores break down as 2-0 favourite 36.0%, 2-1 favourite 28.8%, 1-2 (underdog wins in three) 19.2% and 0-2 16.0%. These markets carry more margin than the match winner, but they're handy if you think a series will go long.
Total maps
Over or under 2.5 maps in a Bo3, which really means "will it go to a third map?". At a 60% edge, three maps happen 48% of the time; for two even teams it's 50%; for a 75% favourite it drops to 37.5%. Unless the gap between teams is big, "over 2.5 maps" sits close to a coin flip before margin.
Kills totals and kill handicaps
Total kills on a map, or a team's kills against the other with a handicap. Kills vary enormously with the patch, the heroes drafted and the teams' styles. Some teams love to fight early and often; others farm quietly and take one big fight at the end. As a toy model, if a matchup averaged 52 total kills with a spread of 13 either way:
| Line | Chance of over (avg 52, spread 13) | Chance of over (avg 46, spread 11) |
|---|---|---|
| 44.5 | 71.8% | 55.4% |
| 49.5 | 57.6% | 37.5% |
| 54.5 | 42.4% | 22.0% |
| 59.5 | 28.2% | 11.0% |
See how a six-kill difference in your average estimate swings the over on 49.5 from about 58% to about 38%? That's why kill totals reward people who actually track team styles under the current patch. Your own guess beats a coin flip only if your average is better than the book's.
Map duration
Will the map last over or under a set number of minutes. Using another toy model, a matchup averaging 38 minutes with a spread of 8: over 35.5 minutes about 62%, over 40.5 about 38%, over 45.5 about 17%. Drafts with strong late-game heroes push games longer; aggressive early drafts pull them shorter.
First blood, first to 10 kills, first Roshan, first tower
These "race" markets are fun, but early-game events are close to random between equal teams and the margin is usually higher. If you play them, focus on matchups where one side's draft or style clearly points to early aggression.
Outrights
Bet who wins a whole tournament. Example board: sixteen teams priced from 4.50 down to 81.00. Add up the implied chances and you might get about 132%. That 32% overround means the favourite at 4.50 is really closer to 5.95 in fair terms. Outrights are fun for a big event, but they're the most expensive market on the board.
How the draft changes everything
In Dota 2, the draft is where a lot of the match is decided before anyone moves. Things to watch:
- Comfort picks. Some players have heroes they're known for. A ban on that hero can change the game plan.
- Timing. Is one team's lineup strongest early, mid or late? That tells you a lot about duration and kills lines.
- Counter-picks. Teams that pick last in a phase can react to what the other side took.
- Flexibility. Heroes that can play several roles hide the plan and make the opponent's later picks harder.
Pre-match prices are set before the draft. Once the picks are locked, some books update the map line. If you have a real read on drafts, betting after the draft is where that knowledge shows up. If you don't, don't pretend; stick to series markets and price shopping.
Patches: the hidden variable
Valve's balance patches can reshape the game. After a big one, results can look strange for a few weeks as teams figure out the new meta. Practical rules:
- Old results from a previous patch count for less, sometimes a lot less.
- Teams with deep hero pools tend to adapt faster.
- Kill and duration averages from the old patch can be badly off.
- Right after a big patch, bet smaller and fewer markets until the picture settles.
Roshan, the Aegis and why objectives matter
Roshan is the big neutral monster that sits in his pit and waits. Killing him drops the Aegis of the Immortal, which gives one hero an extra life, plus other rewards that have changed from patch to patch. Taking Roshan at the right time often decides a high-ground push or a late teamfight. For bettors, that matters in three ways:
- First Roshan markets lean toward whichever team is ahead in the mid game, but a single pick-off can flip it. Treat them as close calls unless one side is clearly dominating.
- Live map prices jump when a team secures the Aegis. If you were thinking of backing the trailing side, the price right after a Roshan kill is often the worst moment to wait for; the book has already moved.
- Duration lines can stretch when both teams play carefully around Roshan instead of forcing fights.
Towers and barracks work the same way. Losing a set of barracks makes the enemy's lane creeps stronger and puts real pressure on the losing team. A team that keeps giving up buildings while winning fights is often less safe than the kill score suggests.
Radiant, Dire and side choice
The map isn't perfectly mirrored. Over the years, players and analysts have argued about whether one side has a small edge in a given patch, and the answer has changed as Valve reworked the map. In many series, the team with higher seeding or the loser of the previous map gets some choice between side and first pick. You don't need to obsess over this, but if you track results, note which side each map was played on. A model that ignores it entirely can be a little off in patches where one side looked stronger.
Roster changes and stand-ins
Dota 2 teams change rosters more often than traditional sports teams. When a team plays with a stand-in, because a regular player is sick, has visa trouble or just left, the results can drop off sharply. Communication and practised strategies count for a lot in a five-player game. Before any bet, check the announced lineup. If the lineup changes after you bet, the bet usually stands; books generally don't void for roster changes, so read the rules.
Building your own simple rating
You don't need a fancy model to get started. A sensible approach:
- Track recent map results for the teams you follow, current patch only.
- Weight results against strong opponents more than wins against weak ones.
- Note roster changes. A new player or a stand-in can change a team a lot.
- Turn your view into a map-win percentage, then use the series table above to get your Bo3 or Bo5 number.
- Compare with the book's fair price after removing the margin. Only bet when your number is clearly better, not just slightly.
The key word is "clearly." If your estimate is 55% and the fair price says 53%, that's well inside the error of a home-made model. Pass. Our value betting explainer goes deeper on how big an edge needs to be before it's worth acting on.
Live betting Dota 2
Dota 2 swings make live betting tempting. A few things to keep in mind:
- Stream delay. Tournament broadcasts typically run on a delay. The book's data feed can be ahead of what you're watching, so "I just saw a huge teamfight" is often already in the price.
- Gold leads aren't everything. Late-game heroes can be behind on gold and still be favourites if the game goes long.
- Markets suspend a lot. Around fights and objectives the market may close. Don't get frustrated and smash the next price that opens.
- Margins are usually higher live. You pay more for the convenience.
If you want to read up on live betting in general, our live betting tips were written for hockey but the discipline rules are the same.

Hedging a series bet
Say you backed Team A for C$100 at 2.40 to win a series. They win map 1, and now Team B is 3.50 to come back. To lock in the same return either way, you'd stake C$240 / 3.50 = about C$68.57 on Team B. If A wins, you collect C$240 from the first bet and lose the hedge; if B wins, you collect about C$240 from the hedge and lose the first bet. Either way, you're up about C$71.43 after both stakes. Hedging isn't free — you pay margin twice — but it can make sense if you'd genuinely rather have the sure thing.
Tournament timing from Canada
Big Dota 2 events move around the world: Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East have all hosted major tournaments. For Canadians that often means matches early in the morning or overnight. Two things follow:
- Set your bets before you go to sleep or wait for the replay. Groggy 4 AM live bets are not a winning plan.
- Check the start time in your own time zone. Schedules shift when earlier series run long, which is common in esports.
Valve's own flagship event, The International, has been the biggest date on the Dota calendar since 2011, with the Aegis of Champions going to the winner. Formats and prize structures have changed over the years, so check the current event's rules for how groups and playoffs work.
Integrity: red flags to respect
Like most esports, Dota 2 has had cases of match-fixing reported over the years, mostly in lower-tier competitions where players earn less and fewer people are watching. That doesn't mean every odd result is fixed, but you should be careful:
- Avoid big bets on obscure, low-tier matches with thin coverage.
- Be wary when a price moves sharply without any news.
- Never pay for "fixed match" tips. Anyone selling them is scamming you, the book, or both.
- Stick to well-known tournaments with clear organizers and published rules.
Settlement rules worth reading
- Technical pauses and remakes. Games sometimes get paused or remade for technical issues. Each book writes its own rules on how bets settle.
- Forfeits and walkovers. If a team doesn't show, match-winner bets may be void or settled differently by book.
- Format changes. If a series format changes after you bet, check how the book treats it.
- Kill counts. Usually based on the official in-game result, but confirm whether things like deny kills count.
Bankroll: how variance hits esports bettors
Here's a simulation of a season of 150 Dota 2 bets at average odds of 1.85, flat 2% of the starting bankroll per bet, run 20,000 times. At 1.85 the break-even win rate is about 54.05%.
| True win rate | Median end bankroll | 10th–90th percentile | % of seasons finishing down |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50% | 77.5% | 47.9%–107.1% | 85.5% |
| 54% | 99.7% | 70.1%–129.3% | 53.7% |
| 56% | 110.8% | 81.2%–140.4% | 34.0% |
Even a 56% bettor, which is strong at these prices, finished down about a third of the time over 150 bets. That's the normal swing of betting. It's why 2% is a sensible maximum and why chasing losses is the fastest way out of the game. If you want the full theory, our French-language bankroll guide walks through staking plans in detail.
A simple Dota 2 betting process
- Pick the tournaments you'll follow and ignore the rest.
- Learn the format: Bo1, Bo2, Bo3 or Bo5, and how the group stage works.
- Note the patch and any roster changes.
- Set your own map-win estimate, then convert it to series odds.
- Compare with the market after stripping the margin. Bet only clear edges.
- Stake a fixed 1% to 2%. No doubling up after a loss.
- Log every bet: market, odds, stake, result, and your pre-match estimate.
- Review after each tournament. Were your estimates better than the closing prices?
Common Dota 2 betting mistakes
- Betting the more famous team because of past results from an older patch.
- Forgetting a Bo2 can end in a draw.
- Treating "over 2.5 maps" like a lock just because the teams look close.
- Chasing big outrights at a 130% book.
- Live betting off a delayed stream and thinking you're ahead of the market.
- Stacking esports parlays where every leg carries a 7% margin.
- Betting low-tier matches you've never watched because the odds look juicy.

Funding a Dota 2 betting account
Most crypto sportsbooks that carry esports also take common coins like bitcoin, ether, Litecoin and dollar-pegged stablecoins. If you're new to crypto deposits, read our crypto deposit walkthrough first, and the Litecoin betting guide if you want a fast, cheap coin for top-ups. Keep in mind that a volatile coin adds price swings on top of your betting results; a stablecoin keeps your bankroll easier to read.

My take
Dota 2 is a great game to bet if you treat it like a real sport: learn the formats, respect patches and drafts, strip out the margin and bet small. The edges are there for people who watch and track, especially in map handicaps, totals and post-draft prices. But the swings are big, the margins are often high and lower-tier matches carry integrity risk. Bet the events you know, keep your stakes flat and keep a record. That's how you stay in the game long enough to find out if you're actually good at it.
Questions players ask
How do Dota 2 series formats change the odds?
Longer series favour the better team. A side that wins 60% of maps wins a best-of-three about 65% of the time and a best-of-five about 68% of the time.
Can a Dota 2 match end in a draw?
Yes, in best-of-two series used in some group stages. Between two equal teams, a 1-1 draw happens about half the time, so read how your market settles a draw.
What does -1.5 maps mean in Dota 2 betting?
In a best-of-three, the favourite must win 2-0. A team that wins 60% of maps does that only about 36% of the time, so the fair price is roughly 2.78.
Are Dota 2 betting margins high?
Often higher than major sports. Example prices of 1.75 and 2.00 add up to about 107%, so shop around and strip out the margin before you bet.
Is live betting on Dota 2 a good idea?
Only with discipline. Broadcasts usually run on a delay, markets suspend around fights, and live margins are often higher than pre-match.
